Tips for Using Your Electric Blanket

Electric heated blankets are ideal for keeping warm and cosy when the weather get colder, so we've compiled some top tips for using your blanket this winter.

Always Buy New

We recommend that when purchasing an electric blanket, you get a brand new one. Second-hand blankets can be unreliable, damaged and also lack safety features such as overheating and overcurrent protection. All Wärmer products have these safety features so that you have peace of mind when using our electric blankets.

Replace Every Ten Years

If your blanket starts to show signs of wear and tear, it is essential to replace it. Things such as loose connections, exposed parts of the blanket, scorch marks and fraying fabric are a good indication that you need to replace your blanket.

When Should I Use My Electric Blanket?

We recommend that you switch your electric blanket on 30 minutes before you plan to go to bed. This will give it time to heat up so that you can get into a toasty bed. If your Wärmer product has a timer, we advise that you set this to turn off automatically.

If it doesn't have a timer, we recommend that you turn your blanket off and unplug it before you go to sleep as the residual warmth will keep you cosy during the night. However, if you wish to keep the blanket it switched on throughout the night, this is no problem as our products feature overheating and overcurrent protection.

How Should I Use My Electric Blanket?

Electric blankets are designed to sit on top of your mattress (under the bedsheet) and heat up the surface of the bed. You should never wrap the blanket around yourself or lie underneath it. It is to be used like a mattress topper.

If you wish to wrap yourself in a heated blanket, you need to purchase a heated throw. These are used just like a traditional blanket making them ideal for snuggling up on the sofa.

Cleaning Your Electric Blanket

Most Wärmer blankets can be machine washed as you can detach the controller from the blanket. Simply unplug and remove the controller from the blanket and machine wash at 30°C max. Please see your instruction manual for specific washing requirements for your product.

For our 'Cover Max' range, you will need to clean the blanket by wiping it down with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent by hand. Ensure that you do not put the controller in water and all the blanket to dry thoroughly by using or storing the product.

Drying and Storing Your Electric Blanket

To dry your blanket, you should spread the blanket out on a clean surface in a shady area. Alternately, you can use a clothesline but it is vital that you do not use pegs on the heating elements of the blanket. You should also not crease or fold the blanket.

When storing your blanket, you should allow it to cool down (or fully dry out) before folding. It is recommended that you roll your blanket up loosely to avoid damaging the wires. Ensure it is stored where no other heavy objects will be placed on top of it.
